Selective Borders

For this image, I made a strange outline using the circle selection tool while holding shift, so that they would combine as one large, unique shape. I then found a pattern and filled the inside of the selection with it (the lightning pattern). After that, I chose another pattern (the metal thing) and changed the stroke selection to use patterns instead of plain colours, and got this.
